Introduction

Is your business posting on social media but getting nothing back when it comes to engagement?

It can take hours to create for socials. To have your content fall flat each time can be seriously underwhelming.

Luckily, there are only a few things you need to get right to see great engagement, and I’m going to teach you them. Read on to discover the secrets to true social media growth.

Problem 01 - You Don't Know Your Target Audience

Doctors, when they start a diagnosis, always start with who you are as a person. What are your allergies? Lifestyle indicators? Do you drink more than the recommended units? Are you a smoker? Do you exercise regularly?

You are the doctor diagnosing your target audience. Instead of health questions, you need to know who these people are and what their dreams, fears and pain points are.

If you don't know your audience, how are you supposed to create anything that makes them think: “Oh this is for me!” “I need to know this!” or “I really relate to this.”

And you need them to think this. This is how you get people hooked.

Quick fix:

Write out who your audience is. What topics and problem areas are relevant to them?

Problem 02 - You Don’t Have a Content Strategy

Good content is a mix of your brand personality and strategy. Listen, you need a strategy. What is your end goal? Are we getting leads, e-commerce sales or more brand awareness?

Once you have an end goal you strategise to get there.

Are you going to educate and inspire your audience so much that they can't wait to sign up for your newsletter?

Are you going to show such inspiring content, of your target audience crushing life with your products, that people need to check out your spring sale?

Are you going to show how culturally relevant your brand is through memes, relatable video content as well as high-impact video production? Driving more brand awareness.

Quick fix:

Decide what you want. What your audience needs to see. Then create the content to get you there.

Problem 03 - Your Visuals Need Some Work

I'm a designer, so I may be biased but I'm going to say it anyway:

“Audiences trust brands less when their visuals graphics look dated, amateur or rushed.”

You need to think about the creatives you are putting out on socials, especially Instagram.

For example, if it’s video content, put some thought into:

If it’s graphics make sure:

Quick fix:

If you’re not the creative type, hire a professional to help you get started. At Tangerine Drift, we provide expert content marketing for startups, crafting scroll-stopping visuals and engaging video content that converts. From engaging reels to social graphics, we'll manage your entire content creation while you focus on growing your business.

Problem 04 - Your Hooks Should Be “Painkiller Solutions”

Back to the doctor; if I've had chronic headaches for the past 6 weeks, and you’re offering me vitamin C tablets, you and I both know that's not gonna cut it.

Sabri Suby spoke about this in his book “Sell Like Crazy”. You need to offer painkiller solutions.

Your hooks headlines and content NEED to be so good, so helpful, so relatable that the audience can't help but watch.

Painkiller solutions fall into one of the Life Force 8 principles (“Cashvertising” by Drew Eric Whitman):

  1. Survival, enjoyment of life, life extension.
  2. Enjoyment of food and beverages.
  3. Freedom from fear, pain, and danger.
  4. Sexual companionship.
  5. Comfortable living conditions.
  6. To be superior, winning, keeping up with the Joneses.
  7. Care and protection of loved ones.
  8. Social approval.

Quick Fix Example:

Here is a landscaper in London:

Content:

Bad: "Get your garden ready for summer"

Good: "6 Tips to Transform your garden in 1 day and make it the envy of the neighbourhood!"

The Lesson: The good copy uses keeping up with the Joneses’ Life Force 8 Principle and has an attractive time limit.

Problem 05 - You Are Posting Inconsistently or Not Enough

As every business and marketing team knows; growth is about testing, learning and pivoting. So is your social media!

The best way to find out what’s working is to start testing content. Start posting content you think your audience could relate to and then learn from the metrics.

If you want to grow fast—you need to learn faster. The only way to do that is to post more.

Designing a lot of good content is hard and that's why you need systems in place.

Quick fix:

  1. Set up systems to design content:
Start building a library of marketing assets and templates to make creating content super quick. Need to learn how? Try our free design library course here “Transform Your Social Media in 5 Days
  2. Set up systems to systems to automate:
Set up systems to: catch data leads from your website; post new blog posts; email new subscribers and DM new followers.
  3. Set up systems to schedule content:
Sit down and schedule your posts ready. Then you’ll have an overview of what’s going out, and how it all fits in line with your strategy/goal for the week.

Problem 06 - You Don’t Have a SEO Strategy

Tik-Tok, YouTube, Threads, X and Instagram all work like search engines. Users are searching keywords, phrases and problems they are having to find content that solves them.

You have to figure out what it is people are searching for. Take note of a few keywords and phrases you can plug into your content so they find it easier.

Quick fix:

Use Google, YouTube and Tik-Tok auto-suggest results to find keywords and phrases that your audience are searching. Tailor your copy, post captions and video hooks around some of these keywords.
